It's one of the most common misconceptions about pregnancy - that morning sickness
happens only in the morning. And for that matter, that it only happens in the
first trimester!
This may be true for some, but many women who experience nausea during pregnancy find that it can happen anytime – and it doesn’t always stop with the second trimester. No one is certain what exactly causes morning sickness and why it affects some
women and not others, but it is thought that increased hormones in a woman’s body
during pregnancy could cause nausea.
Tips to Avoid Nausea
Rest assured, while nausea is certainly uncomfortable and inconvenient, it is
usually not harmful to the baby or to the mother’s health. The main objective
should be to find a method, or combination of methods, that help alleviate your
discomfort.
Many women find that the tips below can help:
If the nausea is worst first thing in the morning, try keeping a small snack,
such as crackers, beside your bed to eat before your get up for the day. Having
something on your stomach at all times can help keep the sick feelings at bay.
When to Call the Doctor
If nausea persists and you feel that it is severe, make an appointment to see
your doctor, who may prescribe medication to help you find relief.
You also should call your doctor immediately if you cannot keep down liquids,
if you feel dizzy when standing, or if you vomit blood.
When going through a phase of morning sickness it can seem like the nausea will never end. Keep in mind that it will end, and the end result will most definitely be worth it! |
